World Mosquito Project, 2021
Mobile learning for global on-the-job adult learners
CONTEXT
World Mosquito Program, a not-for-profit group of companies owned by Monash University works to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases across the world. The Learning Design Solutions team at the World Mosquito Program (WMP) required help to design and develop online modules. WMP had developed a communications strategy at the global level at the headquarters which had to be adopted by local team members across the world.
The team approached us for our experience in designing for the global south context as well as creating mobile-based learning experiences.
KEY QUESTIONS
1.
In the context of a global, distributed workplace learning initiative, with busy adult learners what was the right approach?
2.
What features of the workplace learning platform, and other affordances of the platform could be used to enhance the delivery of modules?
3.
To reduce the time spent on training by the global experts, which learning objectives were critical for the project to be success?
APPROACH
Immersing ourselves in the context of the project we started the project by examining and reviewing in-depth the material which would form the base of the course. Further, we spoke with the team to understand the use-cases of the course. The team had zeroed down on a flexible approach to be used for self-paced and instructor-led training.
A workplace mobile learning platform was to be used to deliver the program. We created mock-ups on google slides and prototypes for review on the platform. This was built as an extension of a learning design strategy conceptualized and was the first concrete visualization of the strategy.
The team had onboarded subject-matter experts who had created the global-level strategy and were adept at training the local teams via face-to-face workshops. To adapt their workshops to digital learning, we worked with them closely to define learning and performance objectives and assessments. Further using a collaborative approach, we created content and activities for their first set of modules.
IMPACT
The mock-up and prototype helped communicate the vision and style for further development. This project set in stone the content development process for the entire course. On the basis of the templates created and design documents defined, further hiring was done to produce the work in bulk.
